🤔 Are You Asking AI for Financial Advice? Read This First.
With all the things ChatGPT can do, it’s only natural that every now and then you slip in some queries about your finances.
Worrying about whether you’ll have enough money saved for retirement or questioning if spending $300 a month on DoorDash is too much are thoughts you can ease with a quick response from Gemini. After all, AI isn’t going to judge you for asking if a 650 credit score is good or bad.
But there’s an important difference between using AI to help you understand your finances and allowing AI to make financial decisions for you.
AI can be an incredibly useful financial education tool, but it can also give you incomplete answers because it doesn’t know your financial history. Additionally, large language models like ChatGPT can often deliver incorrect information with confidence.
So if you’re asking AI how to pay off debt, where to invest, whether you can afford a house, or what you should do with your retirement savings, there are a few things we want you to keep in mind:
1. Use AI as a financial education tool
We’re not here to tell you not to use AI for financial help: that would be like telling you not to use your banking app. Large language models are great for learning about money, such as helping you understand financial terminology when you’re signing a contract or opening a new account.
For example, if you’re thinking about opening a high-yield savings account, you can use it to compare interest rates. If you’re already working with a financial advisor, you can use it to brainstorm questions for your sessions.
The key is to use AI to aid you in your financial journey.
2. Know the difference between financial education and personalized financial advice
When it comes to your money, use AI to help you make informed decisions rather than letting it decide for you. For instance, AI can explain what a Roth IRA is, but whether you should contribute depends on your income, taxes, goals, and personal circumstances.
You can use AI to explore different debt payment options, but you decide which method fits your budget and lifestyle. The key is to look at the information and ask how it applies to your unique situation.
Asking AI to compare different IRAs is helpful, but asking how much you should contribute means relying on a machine that isn’t responsible for your well-being.
3. Remember AI doesn’t automatically know your complete financial life
Depending on how much you use AI, it may seem to know a lot about you. However, a solid financial recommendation requires knowing your:
Income
Debts
Emergency savings
Dependents
Insurance
Taxes
Age
Retirement plans
Risk tolerance
Upcoming expenses
Even if you enter every detail you can think of, AI still can’t account for human emotions, in-the-moment decisions, or unexpected life occurrences. No matter how personalized the responses seem, it still only has a surface-level understanding of who you are.
4. AI can confidently give you incorrect information
Even though AI doesn’t have a mind of its own, it can hallucinate. Hallucinations often happen around market predictions. AI can misinterpret market data or operate on outdated information, leading to inaccurate forecasts.
While AI might give you some great portfolio recommendations, it may over-optimize based on past market trends. The key to avoiding getting burned by these hallucinations is simple: don’t let AI make the final call for you.
If you’re thinking about investing but feel overwhelmed, ChatGPT can probably give you some seemingly sound advice on which stocks to buy or how to invest $8,000.
However, investing isn’t just about putting money into a particular vehicle. You must consider your goals, timeline, diversification, tax impact, and, most importantly, your risk tolerance. Yes, you could feed this information into Claude, but that doesn’t change the fact that Claude can make mistakes and will often tell you what you want to hear, not what you need to hear.
Using AI to explore options or learn investing concepts is great, but working with a professional is still the best option for execution.
6. Don’t give an AI tool financial information you wouldn’t be comfortable sharing publicly
You may come across AI tools that ask for sensitive data, or you might assume that uploading more personal details will help the AI give better advice.
However, when you upload personal documents, exact paychecks, or account balances, that data is often retained by the platform. Once stored, it becomes susceptible to data leaks and identity theft.
When inputting information into AI, stick to general figures or ballpark estimates.
7. Ask AI to help you ask better questions, not just give you answers
Instead of asking direct decision-making questions, reframe your prompts to put yourself in the driver’s seat:
"Tell me what to invest in” becomes “What questions should I consider before deciding how to invest this money?”
“Should I refinance my mortgage?” becomes “What factors should I compare when deciding whether refinancing makes financial sense?”
“Is it a good idea to take out a line of credit?” becomes “What should my financial standing look like before I open a line of credit?”
With better questions, AI helps you gain clarity on your options so you can make the decisions.
8. Verify before you act
AI is a helpful starting point to get a general overview of financial rules and concepts, but you should always verify the details before filing taxes, applying for a credit card, or taking out a loan. Reference primary sources such as the IRS, the Social Security Administration, your employer’s benefits documentation, or your bank.
For major financial moves, a qualified tax, legal, or financial professional is much more reliable.
9. Trust your financial knowledge in the age of AI
Have you ever felt misled by an auto mechanic? Many of us have sat in a shop while a mechanic used technical jargon to explain a problem, and we just went along with it because we didn’t know better. The same thing can happen with AI.
Without financial literacy, it’s easy to read an AI-generated answer and assume it’s correct. But if you have even a foundational understanding of money, you’re much less likely to listen to an overly confident, incorrect response.
When something doesn’t sound right, question it. Building your financial literacy ensures you can spot the warning signs. Technology doesn’t eliminate the need for financial knowledge—it makes it more important.
AI can draft a budget, explain your tax bracket, or break down investing strategies. But while AI can serve as a great assistant, brainstorming buddy, or study guide, it is not the CEO of your finances. Even if you feel like you’ve made financial mistakes in the past, don’t hand full control over to a machine.
Whenever you notice that AI is starting to make decisions for you instead of with you, step back from the keyboard and reassess your approach.
