Hello Reader,

It's Bola here! March is one of my favorite months. Not just because spring is on the way (and it's my birthday month 🎉), but because Women's History Month gives us a chance to pause, look back at how far we've come, and then look forward at how far we still have to go.

And here at Clever Girl Finance, that conversation always comes back to money. Because financial power IS power. It shapes the choices we get to make, the lives we get to live, and the legacy we get to leave behind.

So this month, we're celebrating, and we're doing it the CGF way: with real talk, real tips, and real action steps you can take today!

A quick look back and women through history

It's easy to take our financial freedoms for granted. But it wasn't that long ago that women couldn't do so much of what we do freely today. Here are a few milestones that changed everything:

  • 1974:The Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed, finally allowing women to apply for credit cards and loans in their own name.
  • 1988: The Women's Business Ownership Act eliminated the requirement for women to have a male co-signer to get a business loan.
  • Today: Women are the primary breadwinners in nearly 40% of U.S. households, and we're starting businesses at record rates.

We've come a long way. And that's exactly why we can't afford to sit on the sidelines when it comes to our finances. The women who came before us fought too hard for us to leave our financial power on the table.

The money moves every woman should make today

Here are five key money moves to put in place, not someday, but now. Think of them as your financial foundation. Each one is a step toward the kind of security, freedom, and wealth that no one can take from you.

1. Know your numbers: Do you know your net worth? Your total debt? Your monthly cash flow? If not, that's the very first thing to fix. You cannot build a financial future you haven't mapped out.

Spend 30 minutes this week pulling together your income, debt balances, savings totals, and investments. Write it down. Face it head-on; no shame, no judgment. Knowledge is the starting point for everything.

2. Have money that is yours - in your name: Every woman needs a personal savings account and an emergency fund in her own name. Not a joint account. Yours. This isn't about distrust, it's about security.

Life is unpredictable, and having your own financial cushion gives you options no matter what happens. Aim for 3–6 months of living expenses to start, and start building it one deposit at a time.

3. Invest, don't just save: Saving is great, but it won't build real wealth on its own. A savings account earning 0.5% interest while inflation runs at 3% means you're actually losing purchasing power over time. If you haven't started investing yet, now is the time, even if its just small amounts.

Look into your employer's 401(k), open a Roth IRA, or start with a low-cost index fund. The best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is today.

4. Protect yourself financially: Building wealth and protecting it go hand in hand. Make sure you have the right insurance coverage (life, health, disability), that your beneficiary designations are up to date, and that you have at least a basic understanding of estate planning; a will and a healthcare proxy are a good start. These aren't fun topics, but they are absolutely essential.

5. Never stop learning: Financial confidence isn't something you're born with, it's built. Every article you read, every course you take, every money conversation you have is an investment in yourself.

The more you understand about how money works, the better decisions you'll make. And that knowledge compounds over time, just like interest.

Your legacy starts now

The women you'll see celebrated everywhere this month didn't wait for perfect conditions. They built something, often with far fewer resources and far more obstacles than we face today. And because they did, we have choices they never had.

The best way to honor their legacy? Use those choices. Take care of your money. Build your wealth. Protect your future.

Because when you win financially, it ripples out, to your family, your community, and the next generation of women watching you!
